On 10.12.2016, Tular Cave Laboratory - Jamski laboratorij Tular was organised 2nd INTERNATIONAL MEETING SOS PROTEUS: CONSERVATION OF BLACK PROTEUS AND ITS HABITAT: 30 YEARS AFTER ITS DISCOVERY within the project “Invasive species never rest: raising awareness and prevention about the negative impact of invasive species on the European threatened species" (2016-2017), in partnership with Herpetološko društvo - Societas herpetologica slovenica and Slovensko kačjepastirsko društvo co-funded by the Slovenian Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning, together with the honourable host, Mrs. Mojca Čemas Stjepanovič, the mayor of the Municipality of Črnomelj, Slovenia, and our regional partner the Society Proteus.
The 2nd International meeting SOS Proteus meeting gathered over 70 participants involved in conservation of Proteus and its karst habitat – researchers, students and representatives of NGOs, coming from Slovenia, Italy, Croatia, Germany, Portugal, Romania and Hungary. Meeting was opened Mrs. Mojca Čemas Stjepanovič, the mayor of the Municipality of Črnomelj, as a commitment of the local communities to keep their environment healthy. The program brought a multidisciplinary insight in the most recent research and conservation on Proteus and its habitat, divided in four sessions: 1. Habitat and ecology 2. Veterinary and developmental research 3. Conservation and field research 4. Discussions, conclusion and next steps. The meeting was concluded with a visit of black Proteus at the spring of Jelševnik, in hospitality of Zupančič family.
